University of Kentucky - The Graduate School - Center for Biomedical Engineering

Message from the Director

On behalf of the faculty, students and staff, I invite you to seriously consider our programs in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Kentucky. We have educated students in biomedical engineering through the College of Engineering since 1959. In 1988, through the newly established Center for Biomedical Engineering, we began offering M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Both basic and applied research opportunities are available in a variety of areas, ranging from biomaterials to biomechanics to systems physiology. We recently launched the Professional Master Degree in Biomedical Engineering program, which has an emphasis on developing skills for those who will direct the future course of biomedical technology. Graduates of our Biomedical Engineering Programs are rising to leadership positions in the medical device industry, academia, and medicine.

Wenner-Gren Buildng Drawing The faculty of our Center are nationally and internationally recognized and dedicated to offering the highest quality education with personalized mentoring in research and industrial applications. Other important considerations in making your decision are the educational and research resources available to you and their proximity. For example, when you join our program, the Center for Biomedical Engineering with its classrooms and teaching and research laboratories will be the focal point of your activities. Then, within a two to three building radius, you may be involved in learning and research activities in any one of the departments in the Colleges of Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, or Arts and Sciences, or in units such as the Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Center, the Center for Manufacturing, the Center for Applied Energy Research, and the Advanced Science and Technology Commercialization Center. The close proximity of these excellent resources and the collaborative nature of the Center's faculty make multidisciplinary approaches to problem solving for you as a student extremely easy.

Our staff also works hard to create an environment that is friendly, relaxed and informal. Couple that with after-hours opportunities the central Kentucky Blue Grass area offers, with its beautiful horse farms, lakes and hiking areas, and you have an environment designed to make your educational experience at the University of Kentucky rewarding and enjoyable. As you review our educational programs and areas of specialization described in this brochure, I invite you to contact me or one of our faculty to discuss your specific needs as you consider the next important step in your career. We look forward to working with you in meeting your career goals and trust that one of our programs will be the best choice for you.

Sincerely,
     David Puleo, Ph.D.
