Admissions

Applicants for admission to the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering must meet the general requirements of The Graduate School and are expected to hold a baccalaureate degree from an ABET accredited engineering program or its equivalent.  Applicants with baccalaureates in other disciplines are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Admission to the biomedical engineering graduate programs normally requires GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 for all graduate and undergraduate work, and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores of ≥156 for Quantitative, ≥154 for Verbal, and ≥4.0 for Analytical. Additional application materials include a statement describing your reasons for wanting to pursue graduate education in Biomedical Engineering and letters of recommendations from three (3) faculty members who are familiar with your academic record. Satisfying the above requirements does not guarantee admission to the biomedical engineering graduate program. Applications are reviewed by a committee of CBME faculty on a rolling basis.

For students who do not have an engineering degree, we require that they take the following courses before becoming eligible for admission. The courses listed below are those offered at the University of Kentucky, however, equivalent courses completed at other institutions may be substituted.  The first block of courses is common to many of the life and physical science curricula at the University of Kentucky.  The second block provides additional mathematics and fundamental engineering course work.  The third block is intended for enhancement of the prospective applicant’s background in an engineering discipline that is of interest.

Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies for further information.

XXX   xxx Technical Elective 3

For assistance in deciding the two technical electives, it is recommended that the prospective student identify an area of research interest and contact faculty who work in that area for advice regarding selection of these courses. For further information about faculty and their research interests, please see our website, http://www.cbme.uky.edu/ or contact the Director of Graduate Studies. The above are pre-requisites that we require non-engineering students to take before they become eligible for admission into our program. Completion of these pre-requisites will make an applicant eligible for consideration for admission but does not guarantee that an admission will be offered after completion of these courses.
